Was Toastmasters already in Bamberg?
Actually Toastmasters was in Bamberg for one weekend in the autumn of 2008. The Bamberger Ziegelbau was the venue of the Toastmasters District 59 Conference. This conference was attended by 200 Toastmasters from around continental Europe. Participants attended workshops in Communication and Leadership, networked with other Toastmasters and were entertained and dazzled by the speakers in the Humorous and Impromptu Speech Contests.

What’s a Speech Contest?
Speech contests are an additional way to develop your communication skills at Toastmasters. It’s all voluntary. Contestants first give speeches in their club and compete against other club members. The winner goes on to the next level to compete against winners for other clubs in their area (around 3 to 5 other clubs). The winner of the area goes on to compete against winners from other areas…..and so on. A competitor could theorectically start off by delivering a speech in front of 20 friends at their club and end up speaking in front of 500 Toastmasters at a district conference. The winner of the district conference for the International Speech Contest competes at the Toastmasters International Confereence. Audiences of 1000 people are not unusual.

I have personally competed in the different speech competitions in Toastmasters. I don’t do it because I enjoy competition. I do it to challenge myself. These challenges allow me to take my skills to a new level.
